As of October 1, 2024, stricter rules will apply when it comes to using winter tires in Germany.

Previously, drivers were allowed to use tires that carried the “M+S” symbol, often also known as all-weather tires. Now, however, winter tires must also carry the “Alpine” symbol, which features a snowflake within a triangle-shaped mountain symbol, as seen in the image below.

Potential consequences of not using correct winter tires in Germany

Drivers who are found to not have used proper winter tires could face fines from €60-120. Accidents with incorrect tires could also bring potential insurance implications, as well.

Motorcycles are exempt from this regulation.

Driving is taken seriously in Germany. Here are other tips for safely navigating German roads during the winter months.

• Though no official “winter” driving season exists in Germany, drivers are generally advised to use winter tires from October through Easter.
• Winter tires must have a tread depth of at least 1.6 millimeters.
• All four tires must be winter tires.
