An Ostrich Farm in Germany

I’ve never been to Africa. I’m not sure how well I would fare on Safari, but thanks to the Ostrich Farm Mhou, African wildlife is practically in my backyard. If you’re looking for a daytrip that offers something a little different, head to Straussenfarm Mhou for a closer look at these prehistoric birds as well as some exotic eats.

Admission to the farm is really inexpensive, just 3 Euro for an adult. To receive your entrance wristband, simply head inside the gift shop where the shop attendant will happily assist. While you’re there, take the time to explore the ostrich related goods including ostrich leather, decorative eggs, feather dusters and even meat.

What to Expect

In the center of the farm, immediately after entering, is an area for juvenile ostriches and newly hatched chicks. In this area chairs are set up outside of the pens for those who want to take their time enjoying the animals. You can also take a look at the incubators and care process for hatchlings. And if you are lucky, you may even see chicks in the nursery.

Surrounding the young ostriches is approximately 2 km of walking paths where you can view adult ostriches. Feel free to bring Fido along for the walk, just make sure your dog stays on a leash. There are multiple barriers for the birds, but that didn’t stop my 10 pound terror from having a nervous fit when she saw the large beasts run.

Where to Eat

Adventurous spirits can stop in the Restaurant Farm House and try the house specialty Ostrich meat. Look for items containing the root word Strauß, which means “ostrich” (for example Straußenwurst, Straußenroast or Straußensteak).

For a real treat, make a reservation for the traditional African barbeque or Braai (schedule here). The restaurant is open daily from 9 a.m. – 10 p.m., although they only serve lunch on weekdays from 12 – 2 p.m.

Upcoming Events
